При этом моторное масло с надписью «Gasoline» на канистре вы вряд ли найдёте.

Учитывая этот факт и тот, что дизельный и бензиновый двигатели работают на разных типах топлива, кажется вполне логичным, что моторное масло для них тоже должно быть разным, но так ли это на самом деле и если так, то чем дизельное моторное масло отличается от бензинового?

Для начала стоит отметить, что основное отличие дизельного двигателя от бензинового в способе воспламенения топлива, а во всём остальном оба этих двигателя практически ничем не отличаются.

В обоих двигателях есть коленчатый и распределительный валы, поршни, цилиндры и другие детали. Да, некоторые детали для дизельных двигателей изготавливаются из более прочных сплавов, но это совершенно не означает того, что для смазки этих и других деталей дизельного двигателя должно использоваться некое особенное моторное масло.

Исходя из этого, можно смело предположить, что никакой принципиальной разницы между дизельными и бензиновыми моторными маслами нет и быть не может, что собственно и утверждают некоторые специалисты, ссылаясь на международные стандарты производства моторных масел и их классификацию.

Более того, некоторые из этих специалистов утверждают, что специальное моторное масло для дизельных двигателей придумали маркетологи производителей моторных масел, чтобы наивные автовладельцы покупали именно эти моторные масла.

Европейская классификация моторных масел

Эти специалисты абсолютно правы, поскольку с 2008 года Европейская ассоциация конструктов автомобилей (ACAE) объединила моторные масла класса A (моторные масла для бензиновых двигателей) и класса B (моторные масла для дизельных двигателей легковых автомобилей, фургонов и микроавтобусов) в единый новый класс A/B (A1/B1-10, A3/B3-10, A3/B4-10, A5/B5-10), в результате чего моторные масла стали универсальными, то есть пригодными для использования, как в бензиновых, так и в дизельных двигателях.

Однако, не лишним будет отметить, что моторные масла класса A/B не такие уж универсальные, потому что с 2001 года выхлопная система всех дизельных двигателей оснащается сажевым фильтром, для сохранения ресурса которого желательно использовать специальное моторное масло.

Поэтому в 2008 году появился ещё один новый класс универсальных моторных масел, а именно класс C (С1-10, С2-10, С3-10, С4-10), специально предназначенный для двигателей, выхлопная система которых оснащена каталитическим нейтрализатором отработавших газов и сажевым фильтром.

Так же есть ещё моторные масла класса E (E4, Е6, Е7, E9) и они действительно предназначены исключительно для дизельных двигателей, но не легковых, а грузовых автомобилей и техники специального назначения.

Подводя итог, скажу, что все современные моторные масла для легковых автомобилей универсальные, в силу чего одинаково хорошо подходят для любого типа двигателя, а надпись «Diesel» на канистре не всегда означает то, что это моторное масло относится к классу E или разработано специально для дизельных двигателей. Например, в спецификации к моторному маслу Mobil Super 2000 X1 Diesel указано, что оно соответствует требованиям ACEA A3/B3. То есть, это моторное масло относится к классу A/B и если его залить в бензиновый двигатель, то ничего страшного не произойдёт.

In a basic sense, gas and diesel engines have similar operations. Both engines use internal combustion and a series of rapid explosions within the engine to turn fuel into mechanical energy and help the vehicle move forward.

The difference is how these explosions occur. Let’s take a quick look at the explosion process for each.

In the gasoline engine, the explosion process is:

  1. Intake Stroke – fuel is mixed with air pressing the piston down
  2. Compression Stroke – piston goes up compressing the fuel and air mixture
  3. Power/Combustion Stroke – using the spark plug, the fuel and air mixture get ignited pressing down the piston
  4. Exhaust Stroke – piston goes up pushing the exhaust through the exhaust valve

In a diesel engine, the explosion process is:

  1. Intake Stroke – the intake valve opens, the air gets in pressing the piston down
  2. Compression Stroke – piston goes up compressing the air (heated in excess of 540°C)
  3. Power/Combustion Stroke – at the right time, the fuel is injected & ignited pressing the piston down
  4. Exhaust Stroke – piston goes up pushing the exhaust through the exhaust valve

So the Question Is, Is There a Difference between Gas Engine Oil and Diesel Engine Oil?

Gasoline engine & diesel engine oils are made by combining base oils and additives to achieve the desired performance.

However, when examining the lubricant’s needed performance for each engine type, we begin to diverge.

1. The Viscosity

When thinking about engine oil, viscosity directly comes to mind, as it is one of the most important lubricant elements. Therefore, getting the right viscosity is of an ultimate importance.

Generally, diesel engine oil has a higher viscosity and lower-temperature pumpability when compared to gas engine oil. If it was used in gas engines, several issues might develop, such as heat generation, premature wear & tear, and more.

2. The Additive Levels

As mentioned earlier, additives are one of the essential elements of the engine oils. However, each engine oil has a different level per volume and different components.

What Is the Difference Between Gas & Diesel Engine Motor Oil?

Cans of gasoline engine oil usually have an American Petroleum Institute (API) starburst label that certifies their use for gasoline engines. This distinction may seem odd but not all motor oil is good for gas engines. The difference is especially of interest to those who notice that diesel oil is much cheaper and would like to use it in their gas engines to save money.

Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter is a porous metal filter located along the exhaust line between the engine and the muffler. The metal matrix inside speeds the conversion of toxic emissions into benign products. Some emissions however, can damage the converter’s ability to perform this catalysis, such as lead, zinc and phosphorous. A failing catalytic converter can lead to your car’s failing an emissions test. Since diesel engines don’t use the same kind of catalytic converter, diesel oil has a higher zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) level than gasoline engine oil, to form a film on bearings and the camshaft to prevent wear. ZDDP contains both zinc and phosphorous. This content is the leading reason diesel oil can’t be used in gas engines.

Viscosity Range

Diesel oil is more viscous, in other words heavier or thicker. This is needed because there’s more space between rod and crankshaft bearings in a diesel engine. Thin oil would drain from these spaces. Obversely, putting too thick of an oil in a gas engine will make it run hotter. Heavier viscosity is bad for a gas engine on startup and in cold weather. You would also loose compression of the oil, slowing its circulation into the engine.

Additive Levels

The level of detergents and other additives is higher for diesel, to combat the higher soot levels of diesel engines and take advantage of the difference in the catalytic converter in diesels. In a gas engine, diesel oil’s greater concentration of detergent, or scrubbing agent, can remove manufacturer’s deposits on the cylinder wall that help seal the combustion gases. This can lead to smoking inside the engine, which can in turn damage the catalytic converter.

Replacement Intervals

Some motor oil additives serve to lower the viscosity on startup and raise it at high temperatures. Diesel oil has a longer life span because of the higher level of such additives. Specifically, higher additive levels in diesel oil means you can drive further before they degrade to levels too low for a gas engine. Proper viscosity at proper temperatures prevents wear and strain on the engine. The extra additives in diesel oil don’t help much in a gas engine, since diesel oil is usually sold at higher viscosities than gas engines use. The viscosity is therefore mismatched right from the start.

Use of Diesel Oil in Gas Engine

You can use diesel in cars older than model year 1975, when catalytic converter were first mandated. You must match the viscosity, which could be difficult considering the higher viscosity requirement of diesel engines. Too high of viscosity, in a gas engine, would provide poor protection on startup and during the winter. The higher viscosity would also lower gas engine fuel efficiency slightly. If you do decide to use one type of oil in the other type of engine, you can tell which is for gas engines by the «S» in the oil can coding («S» for «servicing»). «C» is for diesel engines («C» for «commercial»).
