Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 vs Bridgestone Turanza T005: We saw previously how well the latest Michelin Pilot Sport 5 performed against Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 in our previous head to head coverage. This time around we would like to pair Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 with an old guard in the form of Bridgestone’s Turanza T005. Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 which was launched this year in 2022 has been well received in press tests by winning 3 out of 3 tests it has competed in European soil. Turanza T005 was launched in 2018 and has also achieved success in the press test circuit over the years. Without further ado, let’s put them head to head and see who comes out on top !

Results
Results below were taken from the 2022 Tyre Reviews 17 Inch Summer Tyre Test. A total of 9 tires were tested on the Goodyear’s track in France. Do note that as it was done in Goodyear’s own track, they do have a slight advantage as Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 would have been tested multiple times throughout its development time. The graph below shows the comparison between Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 vs Bridgestone Turanza T005 based on the relevant performance category. The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 was set as a reference hence at the 100% mark.
One of the most important performances when it comes to the ultra ultra high performance segment is to have a very strong dry showing. In dry braking, Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 managed to out brake Turanza T005 by 1.5m. Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 made a strong statement by finishing on top of the leaderboard in the dry braking category. Things went in the same direction when it comes to dry handling criteria as Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 was quicker by 2.23seconds compared to Turanza T005. From a subjective point of view, Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 was rated +2 points better than Turanza T005.
According to the test driver, Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 was “it had the fastest first lap pace, nice sporty feeling steering response and felt like a weapon on the brakes, with the average of the three laps just 0.2 seconds slower than the best. As always with Goodyear tires, it was a real pleasure to drive and I’m glad Goodyear has retained this for the new product.” while Turanza T005 “had high levels of understeer, once they were sliding they took a long time to recover, and it gave up all their grip on the first lap then started getting too hot and lost about a second a lap.”. Overall from the results, it is clear that the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 dominated the dry category !

Safety has always been the main theme when it comes to the need for wet performances. In objective wet braking, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 once again took the initiative by out braking Turanza T005 by 2.3m. However in aquaplaning it was a tight affair with Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 marginally better with a slipping speed of 84.1 km/h against Turanza T005’s 83.67km/h. Both tires finished in the last 2 ranking of the aquaplaning test demonstrating that this is definitely not their strength,
Even though Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 had a strong wet braking performance, it did not show in wet handling as both tires were equally matched. Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 was only 0.51 seconds faster while having the same subjective wet handling rating. Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 did however manage to top the charts when it comes to wet handling lap time while Turanza T005 rounded up the top 4. Overall, Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 showed clear advantage in wet braking but they are equally matched when it comes to wet handling & aquaplaning.

Noise & Comfort
In the noise vibration & hardness criteria, Turanza T005 was the best comfort tire with a maximum subjective rating of 10/10 while Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 only managed a 9/10 score. In exterior noise, we witnessed one of the biggest deficits of all time as Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 was 4.7 dB quieter than Turanza T005. This is definitely a big big margin and something to consider if noise is one of your main requirements.

Rolling Resistance
When it comes to extreme sporty tires, rolling resistance is definitely not something the user has in mind when purchasing the tire. However with the sustainability topic being more prevalent, it is good to know where they stand. This is where we witness the biggest percentage margin as Turanza T005 was way better with a rolling resistance coefficient of 7.01 N/kN against 8.84 N/kN of Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6. As pointed out in the test notes, Turanza T005 is a touring segment tire which understandably has a higher requirements in rolling resistance than a ultra high performance tire.

Summary
Overall, Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 showed great strengths in wet, dry & noise. However Turanza T005 was not far behind with better comfort & rolling resistance. As mentioned earlier, as we are comparing 2 different segments it is hard to determine a winner. If wet & dry performances are your top priority, Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 would be perfect. However if rolling resistance and comfort is required, Turanza T005 would be recommended.

Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 vs Bridgestone Turanza T005
Both of the tires offer good control and handling with their different but competitive tread technologies.
The Bridgestone Turanza T005 is the latest addition to the Turanza family of the Bridgestone company. Developed and manufactured in Europe, The Turanza T005 was introduced in the tire market to replace the Turanza TOO1 EVO. They fit sedans, coupes, and passenger cars only as Original Equipment. Turanza has a very sleek look and is great for drivers who are looking for H rated speed and durability in their summer tires with lower noise levels. 
On the other side, the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2, which replaced the Goodyear Efficient Performance tire offers almost 20 to 25 percent more millage (given other factors are same). They also offer almost 50 percent more life. They have improved their overall flexibility of the tire treads and able to manage heat more efficiently. Performance wise, they offer the best handling on dry asphalts when compared to their competitors. The overall wet grip of the tire is also amazing.
If it werent for the low aquaplaning performance of this tire, it would have crowned the king of SUVs.
Comparing Bridgestone Turanza T005 and the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2

Bridgestone Turanza T005
A very different tread pattern is seen on both of these tires. And looking at the tread, the performance of both tires are explained alot.
For example the Bridgestone T005 has a better grip on the road (explained further below), this is because of the more contact with the road. In other words, the T005 has more surface area in contact with the road, which allows it for more gripping. So upon braking the tire was able to stop quicker, comparatively.
For wet asphalts, same is not true however. The Goodyear Performance 2 has better grip on wet surfaces when compared. This is because of the sipes explained below.
Another part of the traction, the handling paints the picture further, as we see an outstanding handling performance of EfficientGrip tire on dry asphalts, and a slightly better performance of Bridgestone T005 on wet road surface.
Overall both tires did great and performance wise they seem to tie each other except for the aquaplaning, where the Turanza T005 is better by a long shot.
Road Traction and Aquaplaning:
To put things simply, we have labelled one of the tire into 3 points.
(1) shows the sipes (lines) on the central part of the tread. Sipes act as wipers to “wipe” away water in front of the moving tire.
(2) shows the outer shoulder of the tire, where you can see very different tread pattern on both. Shoulders come into play during cornering.
And (3) shows the groove on the tire, both of these tires have 4 grooves that explain aquaplaning performances.
Road Grip Comparison:
Considering the tread pattern, the Goodyear Performance 2 came up with some amazing design. The small sipes seen everywhere ensure good wet traction. But this comes at the cost as the more the number of sipes, the less the contact with the road. This hurts the dry grip of the car, putting this tire below average when it comes to dry braking distances.
But if you consider the same marked point (1) on Bridgestone T005, you see cleaner tread blocks, with less sipes on them, hence allowing for more contact patch, which translates in better dry road grip.
Upon braking from 100km/h on dry conditions, the Bridgestone Turanza T005 took 34.8 meters compare to the Goodyear Performance 35.1 metter. (Difference of 0.3 meters)
But the sipes offer better wet traction, so same is not true on wet asphalts, where the road grip of the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 is better.
On wet conditions, Turanza T005 took 41 meters to stop while the Goodyear EfficientGrip took 38.1 meters (difference of 2.9 meters)
For the Goodyear Performance 2, the dry grip was compromised a little for its grip on wet asphalts. The number of sipes seen on the tire forming tread blocks do a great job wiping away water in front of them but also decreases the overall surface area of the tire with the road. So when it comes to its grip on dry asphalts measured by the braking distance comes out to be below average.
Tire Handling Comparison
2 important factors come into play when calculating the overall dry traction. One is the dry grip of the tire (which mostly depends on the contact patch of the tire with the surface), and the other is the handling (which depends on the shoulder of the tire).
Goodyear Performance 2 has better shoulder blocks than its predecessor the EfficientGrip Performance. This translates in to better dry handling. Infact, its one of the best.
The outer shoulders have sipes joining together forming a block, which is able to move in all directions when cornering. So the tire outperforms all other comparable tires when it comes to dry handling. And similarly the wet handling is one of the best as well.
Average time of dry laps for Bridgestone Turanza T005 was 101.67 seconds and for the Goodyear Performance 2, it was 101.1 seconds. Wet lap times of both tires were almost same with T005 0.4 seconds less.
The Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 is remarkable when it comes to dry handling times. This is again because of its amazing shoulder design. As while cornering the shoulders of the tire comes into play. The tire shoulders have u shaped blocks made out of sipes that join to the first groove of the tire. Because of these blocks the tire on the corners have the area for these blocks to move in all directions ensuring the best cornering, braking on corners, and consecutive cornering.
Brigdestone also did a pretty decent job with its shoulders as well. with just half a second behind on dry tracks and exhibited slightly (negligible) better handling performance on wet asphalts.
All in all, both tires did great when it comes to overall traction.
Bridgestone Turanza T005 is manufactured using Bridgestone’s latest Nano Pro Tech technology that has enhanced silica compounds in it. This advanced technology ensures that the silica compounds are evenly distributed throughout the tire. The Nano Pro Tech technology allows the tire to achieve maximum dry traction. Moreover, this technology is incorporated in the asymmetrical tread design of the tire which is constructed radially. The sipes present on the edges of T005 give a good dry braking and contact but provide a low handling time. Though, it does offer a stable steering, the long braking is average and can be improved. The shoulder blocks distribute any contact pressure caused on the dry road equally through the tire and provide stability during high speeds.
What makes the EfficientGrip Performance 2 a great summer tire is its ability to withstand a wide range of temperatures. It has high tread elasticity and great flexibility which enable it to perform well at high temperatures and reducing the chances of damage. This feature also helps the tires perform well on rough road conditions.
Hydroplaning Resistance
The one thing the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 disappointed the most was its poor hydroplaning performance.
The Float speed averaged around 78.5 km/h for the Goodyear EfficientGrip 2 where it was 81.2 km/h with Turanza T005.
For tires that promise stability, this is a low score. While its wet handling is incredibly good, that only comes into account when the tires are directly in contact with the road. While there is still water between the surface of the tires and the asphalt of the road, the hydroplaning technique and performance of the tires is what matters.
When it comes to Aquaplaning, the groove and tread depth plays a huge part. Consider the (3) labelled point on the above image. The grooves 4 on each tires may seem similar, but the depth is less in Goodyear EfficientGrip tire and more in Turanza T005.
Because of this more water evacuates quickly in T005 and because of that, the tire is able to mantain good float speeds.
The factor to take into account here is that hydroplaning resistance is needed even when there is one tenth of an inch of water on the surface of the road. This makes drive on such surfaces dangerous. The lack of hydroplaning resistance lowers credibility of the EfficientGrip Performance 2 as a summer tire and is perhaps the only thing that keeps it from being top ranked.
Rolling Resistance
Many regular tires have an unaffordable high level of rolling resistance. While this is common in UHP tires and is justified because of their incredibly high wet and dry handling performance, a regular 16” summer tire should aim at reducing rolling resistance for a number of reasons. One reason is that higher rolling resistance means higher fueling bills and that is not something a customer needs from a tire of this kind. Another reason is that tires with high rolling resistance performance are bad for the environment.
The Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 has an amazing low rolling resistance. This means its more efficient.
And the low rolling resistance values make sense too, as the tire has overall less contact patch with the road, it requires less energy to “roll”. In other words the more the grip the more the energy required for the tire to roll.
For Goodyear Performance 2, the rolling resistance is averaged around 7.2 kgt where the Bridgestone Turanza T005 experiences a rolling resistance of 7.1 kgt.
The enhanced silica infused along with the steel and polymer reinforcement in the Bridgestone Turanza T005 gives it a low rolling resistance. Infact, its one of the best.
Note here that the T005 is heavier here but still due to its amazing tread technology, it was able to keep the resistance to rolling better.
Noise and Comfort Comparison
The Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 did a pretty good job when it comes to overall noise and comfort the tire brings.
This low noise level is influenced by the low rolling resistance of these tires.
On tests Goodyear EfficientGrip 2 emitted 61.4 dBs where the Turanza T005 had an average road noise of 61.5 dBs.
Note much difference going on here.
With its low noise level and its incredible stability, these tires successfully provide a comfortable ride. Comfort is an important factor in 16 inch summer tires and the EfficientGrip Performance 2 stands out among these tires by achieving good levels of comfort.
On the other side, the Bridgestone Turanza T005 is constructed with Bridgestone B-Silent technology. This technology adds a layer of sound absorbing foam to the inner side of the tire, which successfully reduces the noise levels. This provides a comfortable and noise free ride. Although, while taking a sharp turn or driving at a high speed for a while, Turanza created some noise.
So which tire is better?
Well it all comes down to this.
